Kappa Alpha Psi Congratulates Pittsburgh Steelers’ Head Coach Brother Mike Tomlin

(Philadelphia, PA) February 1st, 2009 – Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., one of the premier Historically Black Greek Letter Organizations in the United States praised Fraternity member Mike Tomlin, Head Coach of the Pittsburgh Steelers for his historic and successful 2008-2009 National Football League season immediately following the conclusion of Super Bowl XLIII.

Brother Mike Tomlin, a Spring 1991 initiate of Eta Omega Chapter (Old Dominion) and charter member of Xi Theta Chapter (William & Mary College), became the youngest head coach to win a Super Bowl when the Pittsburgh Steelers beat the Arizona Cardinals 27 to 23 in Tampa Bay, Florida on February 1st, 2009.  “Brother Tomlin’s win as the youngest head coach to appear in the Super Bowl, merely highlights the fact that youth has very little to do with experience or ability,” Grand Polemarch Dwayne M. Murray said.

Tomlin was promoted to head coach in January 2007, making him the NFL’s tenth African-American head coach and the first in Steelers history.  In his first season, Tomlin lead the Steelers to a 10-6 record and followed that success with this year’s 12-4 record.  In his short tenure he has accomplished two AFC North titles and has been awarded the 2008 Motorola NFL Coach of the Year.

Brother Tomlin proved his skills as a leader and football defensive specialist with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Minnesota Vikings.  However, his career as a wide receiver at William & Mary, where he continues to hold the school’s reception record was the first sign he was a unique athlete and special person.

“Today must be a great day for Mike,” Murray said, “I am sure his wife Kiya and their three children are very proud of him, as I am sure every Brother of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity is proud of him, as well.”

Kappa Alpha Psi trains all of its members to be leaders in every field of human endeavor and leading a professional team on the biggest professional sports stage should be applauded.  Therefore on this day, not only is each member an honorary Steelers fan, but sincerely a true fan of Brother Tomlin and his achievement.
