FRATERNITY RECOGNIZED ON SEASON PREMIER OF ABC’S EXTREME MAKEOVER: HOME EDITION
Philadelphia, PA, September 2008 – Members of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. are anxiously awaiting the premier of this season’s “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” show. Each episode is self-contained and features a race against time on a project that would ordinarily take months to achieve, involving a team of designers, contractors and several hundred workers who have a short weekend to build an entire house, including exterior and landscaping.
Kappa became involved when members of the organization who are associated with a foster care agency became aware of the Jackson family. The children had recently lost their mother and were in danger of being separated when their aunt, Felicia, stepped in. The family quickly grew from her four children to a total of fourteen. Through chance, the agency became aware of an effort by the television’s producers to find a qualified family for one of their home building projects. Kappa was subsequently asked to purchase a 15-passenger van to accommodate the family that, because of size, had never traveled anywhere as an entire group. The Kappa Alpha Psi Foundation came on board to assist as well as a member who owned a car dealership that had the required vehicle. The rest, as the say, “is history.”
The fraternity has since adopted the family as its “2009 National Social Action Family” project and is providing additional support in the way of financial counseling, mentorship for the children, and other on going services. Said Dwayne M. Murray, Esquire, Grand Polemarch (CEO) of the fraternity, “Thanks to members of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity and the Kappa Alpha Psi Foundation, we will donate a van to a needy family, which will be a contribution in assisting the family to be whole.”
The show will air on Sunday, September 28th, 9:00 p.m. EST on your ABC affiliate. We encourage everyone to watch.
