“Kappa Alpha Psi” State Historical Marker Will Be Dedicated in Bloomington
A public dedication ceremony for an Indiana state historical marker is scheduled for Saturday, October 25, 2008. The state historical marker commemorating the Kappa Alpha Psi national collegiate fraternal organization will be dedicated at 1469 E. 17th Street, Bloomington. The ceremony will begin at 10:00 A.M. Eastern Daylight Savings Time and is part of the 40th Anniversary and Reunion Celebration for Indiana University’s Groups Student Support Services Program.
The text follows for the state marker entitled “Kappa Alpha Psi”:
Excluded from social events at Indiana University, black male students founded and incorporated Kappa Alpha Nu in 1911. One of the earliest black national social fraternities established in the U.S. One goal was to expand to other schools to help members attain high “intellectual, moral and social worth.” Name changed to Kappa Alpha Psi, 1915. In 1961, over 600 members attended the dedication of this building as the Elder Watson Diggs Memorial, to house the fraternity’s Alpha (first) Chapter. Fraternity sold house in 2005 to Indiana University Foundation. As of 2008, Alpha chapter is active on this campus and more than 700 undergraduate and alumni chapters have been chartered worldwide.
Everyone is invited to attend this dedication ceremony for a state historical marker that commemorates the founding of this fraternity at Indiana University and its expansion across the country and world.
State historical markers commemorate significant individuals, organizations, places, and events in Indiana history. These markers help communities throughout the state promote, preserve, and present their history for the education and enjoyment of residents and tourists of all ages. For more than 90 years the Indiana Historical Bureau, an agency of the State of Indiana, has been marking Indiana history. Since 1947, the marker format has been the large roadside marker, which has the familiar dark blue background with gold lettering and the outline of the state of Indiana at the top. There are approximately 500 of these markers across the state.
