The Historic Kappa House Restoration Foundation
The Historic Kappa House Restoration Foundation was recently established for the purpose of restoring the 1708 S Street, NW, Washington, DC home of the Washington Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc. On Sunday, April 27, 2008, from 4:00 - 7:00 PM, the Historic Kappa House Restoration Foundation, in collaboration with the Washington DC Alumni Chapter, Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., and the Washington DC Kappa Silhouettes will host the Centennial Celebration of the Historic Kappa House. The festivities will be held at the Josephine Butler Park Center, located at 2437 Fifteenth Street, NW, Washington, DC 20009. The Historic Kappa House Restoration Foundation is a tax-exempt, Section 501(c) (3) organization.
This event will feature live music, hors d’oeuvres, and an awards ceremony recognizing individuals, groups, community and business people who have shown exemplary leadership in support of the restoration and preservation of the Historic Kappa House.
We will celebrate the one hundred years of this property, its special relationship with the residence for the Vice President of the United States, the Minor Teachers College Building and the progress and plans for its restoration. These landmark historic properties were designed by noted architect Leon E.Dessez,. FAIA, 1858 - 1918. Constructed in 1908, the property is listed on the National Register of Historic Places by the US Department of the Interior. This listing recognizes the property’s special architectural significance, the historical significance of events which took place there, and the contribution of the fraternity members to the community and to the Nation.
The Washington DC Alumni Chapter purchased the property in 1949 when African Americans in Washington had very few places to go for any type of social activities. The members were committed to fight for social justice and preparing for a better day in an era of social causes, strong ideals and goals. It not only raised the status of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity members, it became the nucleus of black togetherness in the midst of a hostile, segregated city. Historically, the Fraternity has permitted use of the house for various social events and for seminars and meetings for the purpose of implementing visionary programs and activities that impact and empower the community.
The Historic Kappa House Restoration Foundation needs your financial donations. Thank you in advance for the donation and we look forward to moving forward with the restoration in anticipation of the 2009 Kappa Konklave here in Washington, DC..
