Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. Announces Milestone Achievement in Sunday of Hope Initiative
(Philadelphia, PA)- May 28, 2010 – Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. announced today it has achieved a milestone benchmark of raising One Million Dollars in its historic Sunday of Hope Initiative partnership with churches and the community in a multi-layer effort to support the work of the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
The Grand Polemarch, Dwayne M. Murray, Esq., along with ministers and representatives of the top contributing churches to the Sunday of Hope Initiative, during a ceremony at St. Jude’s headquarters in Memphis, Tennessee, today made the presentation to St. Jude representing the million dollar mark. “Kappa Alpha Psi began this initiative three years ago, because we knew that the work of St. Jude was an invaluable asset to the lives of children,” Murray said, “we are pleased and eternally grateful to our partners—the churches and communities that worked alongside us for recognizing this organizations’ priceless work.” The keynote speaker for the occasion was Reverend Dr. Calvin O. Butts, III, Pastor of the historic Abyssinian Baptist Church in Harlem. He emphasized the wisdom of his fraternity partnering with St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and understanding God’s charge to each of us to care for “the least of these.”
Kappa Alpha Psi began the Sunday of Hope Initiative in May 2008 with a goal of raising $500,000 in five years, by partnering with churches and other key local community groups in each city and region where the fraternity’s more than 750 Undergraduate & Alumni Chapters provide community service.
At the time of the announcement three years ago, Grand Polemarch Murray said, “we have decided to assist in the waging of war against childhood diseases, and the work at St. Jude’s exemplifies the frontline of the battle against cancer and other diseases that affect our children. It’s all about the children, and I urge all members of Kappa Alpha Psi to continue to reach out to churches and other organizations to assist us in this perpetual, lifesaving war.” He said that, “we’re particularly proud of the tremendous work St. Jude does in saving lives in it’s sickle cell program, a disease that disproportionately affects African Americans.”
Because so many answered the call to action, the Grand Polemarch also expressed enormous gratitude to each and every church family and community organization that stood with the fraternity in supporting the life saving work of St. Jude. “In one of the worst economic periods this country has seen since the Great Depression, countless numbers of people opened their hearts and their wallets,” Murray said. “Martin L. King, Jr. once said, ‘the question is not if I help that person what will happen to me; but, if I don’t help what will happen to them.’ Through these efforts we have shown people still care about what happens to them.”

Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Celebrates St. Jude Partnership
An Initiative for the Health of Children
(Philadelphia, PA) May 7, 2008 – Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. announced today that it is celebrating its ongoing partnership with the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and their work to eradicate cancer in children. The celebration will be held at the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis, TN, May 12-13, 2008.
The membership of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., has taken on the awesome responsibility of sponsoring events at the local levels, educating and making citizens aware of the great work of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, and the ongoing need to highlight health/wellness, especially for children who need it most. The fraternity has held various golf tournaments throughout the country to raise funds for St. Jude and in 2007 launched its “Sunday of Hope Project” in partnership with churches across the country, aimed at raising funds that directly impact on the lives of children with cancer who are able to avail themselves of the great services provided by St. Jude Children’s Research Center.
This celebration is being sponsored by St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, to better familiarize the leadership and members of Kappa Alpha Psi with their facilities and operations, and to encourage the long-term relationship that is expected to grow with the participation of other Greek-lettered organizations. The entire National Leadership of the fraternity, as well as the Top Ten (10) contributing Churches, and the Top Five (5) Kappa Chapters are expected to attend.
According to Grand Polemarch (president) Dwayne M. Murray, Esq., “Our St. Jude initiative has exceeded our initial goals, and we are looking forward to increased emphasis on health/wellness issues and increased support from our more than 650 local alumni and undergraduate chapters and the partnerships they have established with churches and other philanthropic entities. This is one of the many ways we are seeking to inspire members and our constituents to increase our contributions to the betterment of mankind.”
Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. has supported the efforts of St Jude for years and today’s announcement acknowledges the relationship in perpetuity and that Kappa Alpha Psi is true to its commitments, especially for our children. As a result of the fraternity’s overall efforts, in 2010 the lobby in the Translational Trials Unit wing of the hospital will be dedicated in its honor

Fraternity Announces Successful 1st Annual Sunday of Hope Program
(Philadelphia, Pennsylvania), March 2008 – Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. recently announced that its 1st Annual Sunday of Hope (SOH) program exceeded its initial goal for fundraising. The SOH program is a partnership with the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital headquartered in Memphis, Tennessee. The fraternity committed to raising a minimum of $500,000 over a five-year period to support the hospital’s initiatives through a cooperative between members and various churches across the country starting January 2008. After a recent conference with Kappa officials and key members of St. Jude, it was announced that the Sunday programs have raised over $200,000 to date. Coupled with the fraternity’s previous donation of $110,000 brings Kappa’s total contributions to over $300,000 after the first year.
Grand Polemarch (CEO) Dwayne M. Murray, Esq. is excited with the progress of the program. “We are answering the call to service. Our partnership with St. Jude is a relationship of substance being replicated on all levels of the fraternity. Our membership truly understands that service to others is real service to Kappa.,” said Murray during a recent telephone conference with the St. Jude SOH Committee.”
St. Jude has invited the leadership of Kappa to Memphis this May to celebrate the program’s overwhelming success. Also, joining the group will be the pastors of the top ten (10) contributing churches. Highlights of the celebration will be taped and included in a television special that St. Jude is producing for later in the year. The program is expected to conclude in 2010 with the dedication of the lobby in the Translational Trials Unit wing of the hospital being named for the fraternity.

Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Calls its Pastoral Level Brothers to Service for its “Sunday of Hope Project”
“And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, and have not charity, it profiteth me nothing.” I Corinthians 13, Verse 3.
(Philadelphia, PA) November 20th, 2007 – Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. announced today that it is seeking the enthusiastic support of its Pastoral Level Brothers in participation in its “Sunday of Hope Project” to benefit the initiatives of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
Grand Polemarch Dwayne M. Murray announced the “Sunday of Hope Project” on August 30th. The project requests fraternity chapters throughout the country, along with local churches in their communities, to coordinate efforts to raise $500,000 for the dedicated and enormous good work of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and their work to eradicate cancer in children.
“It is our hope that those Brothers who have been called to the service of the God can use the teachings of charity as written by the Apostle Paul to assist in this important goal,” Grand Polemarch Murray said. “This is a project, which I believe can serve to benefit thousands of ill children, and it is a project Kappa Alpha Psi and those members who serve as pastors in congregations across the country care deeply about,” Murray emphasized during the announcement.
In order to ensure the success of this program, the fraternity is asking all Pastoral Level Brothers to contact Dr. William A. Adkins, Jr. who is the Chairman of this initiative via email at .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) or telephone: 901-679-6711, to gather more information about this project so that they can share this project with their congregations and be liaisons in this project.
The inaugural National Sunday of Hope program will take place on Sunday, January 6, 2008 in the Los Angeles Area and continue around the country throughout the month of January. Grand Polemarch Murray outlined the program stating, “the goal is for each chapter-church partnership to raise $1,000.00 toward this effort to honor and support St. Jude’s young cancer patients and their families.”
Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. has supported the efforts of St Jude for years and today’s announcement confirms the commitment of the fraternity to encourage achievement in every field of human endeavor – including the achievement of the youngest of us to be cancer survivors. Grand Polemarch Murray emphasized the importance of gaining the support of Pastoral Level Brothers saying, “The Apostle Paul says of hope, faith and charity that charity is the greatest of the three and the level of charity we can provide in the support of St. Jude’s is immeasurable.”
Reminder: St. Jude Golf Tournament
Brothers,
Please be reminded of the St. Jude golf tournament coming up on Friday November 2, 2007 at the Gauntlet Golf Course in Fredericksburg. We need all chapters of the Eastern Province to support this event. We were able to lead the Fraternity in contributions of $10,000 to the St. Jude effort last year and I expect nothing less this year. I am asking each chapter to send a team to support this effort. If you can’t send a team, then at least buy a full page ad for the booklet. The committee is working very hard to make this year’s tournament a success. I would like to thank brothers Tommy Walker and Neil Hudgins for their efforts in this endeavor.
Brothers, lets do what we do!!!!!!!
Yours in the Bond,
John T. Lanier, Sr.

St. Jude/Kappa Alpha Psi “Sunday of Hope”
Kappa Alpha Psi, Inc. has partnered with St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital to raise funds. Last year we raised $100,000 (over $10,000 from the Eastern Province) which represented the largest donation that Kappa has given to any charity. Due to our success and goals, Kappa Alpha Psi, Inc. has committed to raise $500,000 in five years. With this commitment, the St. Jude lobby of the Translational Trials Unit will bear the Kappa name.
Grand Polemarch Murray is leading the charge with his strong commitment to St. Jude, and is relying on us all to push its continued success. This year St. Jude has developed a program for Kappa called ‘’Sunday of Hope’’. This program is designed to be implemented in churches across the country. Please review the attached presentation, it provides a detailed TIMELINE in which I have highlighted some important dates below:
TIMELINE
September – November
- Each alumni chapter is asked to secure at least one church to participate in the Sunday of Hope program which takes place in January. The goal for each participating church is to raise at least $1,000.
- After a church agrees to host the Sunday of Hope, the designated Kappa Representative will assist the church official in completing the Sunday of Hope commitment form. I will be getting those forms out to the chapters once I received them from St. Jude.
- Please have all commitment forms completed and a copy sent to me by November 5th. Also have the church registered by November 20th.
December
- At the beginning of December, a kit will be shipped to the designated Kappa Representative.
- The Kappa Representative will be responsible for delivering the Sunday of Hope kit to the church. The Kappa Representative will also need to verify that all aspects of the program are in place for implementation.
January
- On the actual day, the Kappa Representative will be presenting the Sunday of Hope to the church congregation using the talking points provided by St. Jude. In addition (if facility capable), the Kappa Representative will show a St. Jude patient story video.
- The Kappa Representative along with the church minister will ask the families to give a “love offering” to St. Jude. A bookmark will be given to each family that donates to this worthy cause. During this time, the St. Jude gospel CD can be played.
March
- St. Jude will host a National check presentation ceremony at St. Jude for Kappa members and top church officials.
- The top 10 fundraising churches and their Kappa contact will be invited to attend the check presentation ceremony.
- St. Jude will send out a national post event press release to publicize Kappa’s commitment to the community.
Brothers, I can’t stress enough the importance and significance of our expansion of this partnership. For any questions, please don’t hesitate to send me an email or call.
