A Legacy of 99 Years Continues

The Story of Kappa Alpha Psi   is replete with references about Thomas B. Mayo, Past Grand Keeper of the Records, Harrison R. Duke, Past Province Polemarch, of the current North Central Province, and Gorham L. Black, Jr. Gorham L. Black, III continues this Legacy of Achievement

On April 14, 1962 at the XI of Kappa Alpha Psi, Howard University, a little more 50 years ago, Brother Gorham L. Black, III crossed the burning sands and was first pinned by Brother Dennis F. Hightower.    Subsequently, Brother Black received a Bachelor’s of Arts degree in history graduating in 1963 as a Distinguished Military Graduate and was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant of Infantry in the United States Army.  Brothers Black and Hightower also served together in the Army for ten years.

Since 1914 members of the Black family have distinguished themselves as Kappa men and military men.

Brother Black III’s, father (Gorham L. Black Jr.), was initiated at the XI of Kappa Alpha Psi in 1939 and was a member of the famed Tuskegee Airman.  In “The Story of Kappa Alpha Psi”, Brother Black, Jr. can be seen standing with other Tuskegee Airman in 1944.  He served twenty-seven years in the U.S. Army retiring as a Colonel. In 1979 Brother Black Jr. became Pennsylvania’s first Secretary of the Department of Aging.

Brother Black III’s brother, Brother Frederick H. Black Sr. was also initiated at the XI of Kappa Alpha Psi in 1966 and served twenty-six years in the United States Army retiring as a Colonel.

Brother Black III’s Grandfather, Brother Harrison R. Duke, Sr. was initiated at the Beta of Kappa Alpha Psi in 1914.

Brother Black III, great Uncle, Brother Thomas Mayo was also initiated at the Beta of Kappa Alpha Psi 1914.

Brother Black III completed his military service in 1990 retiring as the Garrison Commander, U.S. Army Garrison, Fort George G. Meade, Maryland. Since his retirement Black has held a number of academic positions, including Senior Assistant to the President and Associate Vice President for Administration of Howard University, Washington D.C. and Executive Assistant to the President of Albany State University in Albany, Georgia.

Recently, Black was named Maryland State Director of Selective Service by Maryland Governor, Martin J. O’Malley and appointed by President Obama.

At the June 2012 Chapter meeting of the Columbia (MD) Alumni Chapter, Brother Black III was pinned a second time by Brother Hightower, this time with his father’s (Black Jr.) 50-year pin. Brother Larry Gibson, prominent Baltimore attorney and XI Chapter line Brother initiate looked on.  …The Legacy and the Journey continues.
